"Alicia" — by designer: Nicky Kriara
Soon to hit the streets!
We rescue pianos and put them on the street for everybody to enjoy. We want to give pianists more opportunities to play for the public.
I wanted to add height to the silhouette of the piano. I’ve been making clay sculptures that are influenced by antennae. I thought elongated shapes were fitting for this project. For me, they represent antennae unfolding into the atmosphere as notes are played. I knew which glazes I wanted to work with on the ceramic pieces. I used those pieces as starting point to block off areas of color to paint.
Nicky is a Portland native. She studied painting in Los Angeles, CA and Amherst, MA before earning a BFA in ceramics from the University of Oregon. After college, she ran an art gallery in NW Portland and worked on stop-motion films with LAIKA studios. She now runs a ceramic design company called Niko Far West.
Namesake Musician: Alicia Keys
"From the beginning of her career, Keys has been noted for being a multifaceted talent, as a singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, arranger, and producer. She received notability for her singularity and maturity as a classical musician and singer-songwriter. ... On MSN's list of 'Contemporary R&B, hip hop and rap icons', it was stated that Keys achieved prominence by 'drawing from her classical technique as a pianist, enhanced by her ease as a multi-instrumentalist...and songwriting steeped in her formal studies.'"
This piano is waiting quietly for the perfect place to be in Portland. Stay tuned!
